Send from your custom address in Apple Mail

These instructions combine a Gmail destination inbox with your custom outgoing address. A different inbox provider requires that provider's incoming settings and authentication; do not use Gmail's incoming server for another provider.

Before starting, obtain a Google app password for Mail (requires Google 2-Step Verification and an account that permits app passwords). Keep it private. You will use that app password for incoming Gmail and the separate SMTP password in Kavyar's secure link for outgoing mail. If your Google account cannot create app passwords, use Thunderbird with Google's normal sign-in instead.

Mac

  1. In Mail, choose Add Account → Other Mail Account. Use manual setup so you can select different incoming and outgoing credentials. Enter your name, custom address and Google app password, then continue to the server settings.
  2. Select IMAP. Incoming server: imap.gmail.com. Incoming username: your full Gmail address. Incoming password: your Google app password.
  3. Outgoing server: smtp.improvmx.com. Outgoing username: your full custom address. Outgoing password: the SMTP password from your secure link.
  4. In Mail's Settings → Accounts → Server Settings, edit the outgoing server if necessary. Turn off automatic connection management for that server; use port 587, TLS/SSL, and Password authentication. Leave incoming security on.
  5. Send a message to a different inbox using your custom From address, and test a reply.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Add Account and choose the Other/manual mail-account option (labels vary by iOS version).
  2. Add your name and custom address, choose IMAP, and enter the incoming Gmail server, Gmail username and Google app password described above.
  3. Enter the separate ImprovMX outgoing server, custom-address username and SMTP password. Save the account with Mail enabled.
  4. In the account's SMTP settings, confirm the primary outgoing server uses port 587, Use SSL on, and Password authentication. Test sending and replying.

Use this configuration for your custom address. Sending as your original Gmail address requires Gmail's outgoing server; do not route it through these custom credentials. Never dismiss certificate warnings to make setup work. For multiple sending identities, Thunderbird may be easier to manage.
